Dakkon's Backstory

.

Background

Where was your character born?
Dakkon Blackblade was born somewhere in Absalom, though the details are unclear —Haleen never knew exactly where he was born, or if she did, she never told him before she vanished. Much of Dakkon's childhood actually took place in Riddleport, with his adopted mother attempting (unsuccessfully) to shelter Dakkon and his brother from the criminal culture of that pirate city. She did take the brothers on several journeys to Magnimar with her, for reasons Haleen never really divulged.
.

Who raised him?
Haleen, a mysterious benefactor who raised both Dakkon and his older brother Lysis from a young age. She was a retired adventurer or explorer of sorts, that much he knew from her strange tales. A kindly woman to him and his brother, and other adopted children, she had a shadowy side that he only glimpsed once or twice. She's been missing for some time, and Dakkon is determined to find her.
.

What was happening in the region when your character was growing up?
Oh, the usual Riddleport odds and ends: rampant piracy and theft, mafia and gang warfare, arson, murder, and a strange juxtaposition of scholars and magi attempting to sleuth out the nature of the Cyphergate while they avoided the city's violent and corrupt nature. You know, that sort of thing….
.

Does your character have any relatives?
Lysis Blackblade (who's taken to calling himself "Doctor" though he lacks formal training in medicine) is Dakkon's older but smaller brother. When things got rough, Dakkon did the physical "negotiations" while Lysis did the magical ones. In times of ease and peace, it was Lysis who handled delicate matters like making friends, and making "small talk".
.

.

Motivation

What are your character's immediate goals? What would he like to do in the coming year?
First and foremost, Dakkon sees himself as a crime fighter. The man people can actually count on, when the police force is as (or more) corrupt then the criminal elements they are supposed to protect against. He wants to find Haleen as soon as possible, certainly, but he also intends to build up a company of likeminded folk around himself to present a more secure and bigger threat to the crime lords who rule both Riddleport, and elsewhere. His eyes ever turn towards the sea, in the hopes that his rakish lover, Ashuanta, will return from the eastern lands or whatever trouble she's getting herself into… again.
.

What are his long-term goals?
Find Haleen and protect her from whatever is worrying her, once and for all, by ending the threat. Find Ashuanta (or entice her back to him) and woo her to marry him; and also end the threat against her and restore her rightful place in the royal succession of the Jade Kingdom …wherever in the Nine Hells that is.
.

What type of person would be his ideal mate?
Well, one would -think- it was a woman of high moral standards, reverence for the law and a reserved social persona. However, he's stumbled across quite the opposite, and fallen for her hard; "The Lady of the Thundering Sea", Ashuanta, who claims to be a deposed princess from an eastern kingdom, and has made quite a reputation for herself as a ferocious pirate captain. Even the thought of her brings conflicted feelings of "I must arrest you and bring you to justice" alongside "I love you and will kill anyone who threatens you", among others. How could he be attracted to, and love, a being who holds chaos in such high esteem?

It seems love is complicated for an orphaned fey-touched paladin of the Empyreal Lord of vengeance. Maybe it's that fey blood in him that's swaying him so. Or maybe its something else?
.

Who is his patron deity? Is he a devout worshiper?
Ragathiel, the General of Vengeance, an Empyreal Lord and servant of the gods who through transcendence has achieved some measure of divine power. His portfolio includes chivalry, duty, and vengeance, and his holy symbol is a bastard sword crossed with a crimson wing. He makes his home at the base of the mountain of Heaven, in his eponymous fortress, a magnificent steel structure designed to withstand a thousand-year siege if need be.

As strange as it may seem, Ragathiel is the son of Feronia, a demigoddess of the Plane of Fire, and Dispater, the Father of Dis (the 2nd layer of Hell). He was conceived in a brief tryst (lasting only a few centuries), after which his mother took him out of Hell. His tainted heritage has left him with a wrathful heart, and the angel struggles constantly to master his baser impulses in service to the light. In the Maelstrom he wrestled for 16 years with a monstrous evil serpent whose scales wept acidic blood until he was able to choke the life out of it. He led an entire army against one of the iron fortresses of Avernus and burned the castle to the ground with holy fire, single-handedly maiming Infernal Duke Deumus in the process. At some point in history, Ragathiel destroyed Typhon, the original ruler of the first layer of Hell (though some say he was manipulated into doing so by the schemes of Asmodeus, to punish Typhon for his indiscretions.)

Those who have taken vows, especially those of duty or vengeance, hold Ragathiel as their ideal, and his agents sometimes assist those who have been grievously wronged and now seek righteous vengeance.
.

Is he a devout member of any nonreligious cause?
Not a unified cause per se', but yes, Dakkon looks favorably upon any right-minded vigilantes, and on those who oppose corruption in governments or in organizations that are supposed to protect those who cannot protect the lives and welfare of the common citizenry. He will attempt to aid such people where it does not conflict with his own ideals or duties.
.

Is there any race, creed, alignment, religion or the like against which he is strongly prejudiced?
He is somewhat desensitized to the lesser evils of men due to living in Riddleport much of his life, though he still despises such things and will defend the innocent or naive against them. That said, Dakkon will not suffer a demon to live, nor any evil fey, and he will not bother to tarry long in the hopes of redeeming the humanoids that consort with such powers; their souls can figure that out in the afterlife, where they can do a lot less damage to others.
.

What is his greatest fear?
He was once afraid of men who were larger than him, and women who stirred his heart. And like any sane person, he was afraid of monsters, demons and other supernatural terrors. No more. Dakkon found that after putting his faith in Ragathiel, and testing that faith in the fires of combat and temptation, he has transcended Fear itself. He feels none, and in fact any he calls ally who choose to stand near him will find themselves bolstered against fear as well.
.

What is the one task he absolutely refuses to do?
Prosecute Ashuanta for her crimes as a pirate, or turn her over to the ruling authority of any nation for such treatment. It is not only his flesh that is moved by her presence, but his heart. He will not betray her.

There are myriad other things he would refuse to do, in accordance with his Code of Conduct. The ends do not justify the means for Dakkon, although he has absolutely no problem with using what other paladins might call deception and guile against the enemies of his god or what is good and right. To truly defeat evil, one must master it's form, and transcend it. Only then can one through action and deed serve as example to others who might be redeemed… and crush those who cannot be redeemed.

Idiosyncrasies

What is your character's motto or favorite saying?
Dakkon is a condescending asshole, generally speaking. He will mercilessly insult people even as he saves their lives. His older brother, Lysis, has usually been the one to keep him in check (or to find a way out of a bad social situation.)

Examples of things he's been known to say, include:

  • "My my, what a surprise. You are a failure. …oh wait, that's no a surprise at all." to anyone who makes a mistake or loses a challenge.
  • "Yes, you go and do that. Meanwhile I'll do something that actually matters." to someone who has the 'wrong idea' about what to do next.
  • "Ah yes, I have heard of you. And sadly, now I must to meet you as well… the gods shit on me this day." when meeting someone who's name he's heard before, and that doesn't impress him immediately.
  • "Hmmm… I haven't heard of you. I'd prefer to keep it that way." when meeting anybody else who doesn't immediately impress him.
  • "Hah! You are truly a wit! Actually, that's only half true." when bantering with someone he respects, or when someone genuinely makes him laugh.
  • "Most impressive. Perhaps you do have a redeeming quality after all." to someone he deeply respects, who performs a task admirably or comes up with a great idea.
  • "How very amusing… should I be afraid?" when someone attempts to threaten him.
  • "Well, well, look what we have here… future corpses." when he steps out of the shadows to confront a group of obviously evil/vile opponents.
  • "I urinate on the shrines of your ancestors, from one thousand feet." when he defeats (or is about to defeat) a significant opponent.
  • "Well then, my mistake. Look not for sympathy from me though. Perhaps your mother can comfort you; she's probably comforted every sad and lonely man in this city already." when forced to apologize.
  • "Don't look at me with that smell." when someone stares at him for too long.
  • "Go bathe yourself; or at least have the decency to waft your foul stench in the other direction." when someone stands close by for too long.
  • To his allies: "Troglodytes. Quickly, we must flee!" when he's annoyed by haughty noble-women.
  • To his allies: "Guard your horse(s). These men are known to fornicate with them." when he's annoyed by haughty noble-men.

.

What is his favorite color?
Silver.
.

Describe what he would wear if money were no object?
Mithril heavy armor.
.

What is his favorite food? Drink?

  • Food: ham steaks, pork chops, bacon, basically anything swine-related.
  • Drink: the strange tea of flowers that Ashuanta introduced him to, on their first night alone.

.

What is his favorite animal?
The griffon.
.

What habits of his friends annoy him most?
Talking. Particularly, talking loudly, and especially if talking to him when he wants to be left alone.

Traits: rank each trait from 1 to 10

Courtesy: 1
Except with Ashuanta, or others who've somehow earned his deep affection, in which case he awkwardly pulls off a 4 or 5. He will also so some measure of courtesy to children.

Valor: 8

Self-sacrifice: 9

Generosity: 7
He is very generous materially / physically, even putting himself in danger, but his verbal callousness reduces this score overall.

Sobriety: 8
He rarely imbibes alcohol, though he will on ceremonial or special occasions.

Calm temper: 6
This is not his strong suit, however, he's no raging barbarian either. He can be extraordinarily cunning and patient in pursuit of his mission, but his reactionary social nature lowers this score.

Optimism: 8
Though he speaks like the biggest cynic, on the inside he is actually an optimist. Only those closest to him know this.

Curiosity: 6
Certain topics and issues intrigue him greatly and would rank as 9 or 10, while many others he ignores and would rank as 1 or 2.

Forgiveness: 6
His training as a paladin has made him somewhat forgiving, though that's not his nature at all. It is a learned skill for him.

Cheerfulness: 2
Nope. Unless Ashuanta is near, or perhaps young children, in which case he might show his cheerful side, such as it is.

Patience: 7
See "Calm Temper" above.

Honesty: 9
He will almost never tell a direct falsehood. However, he will use other forms of deception as needed against the enemies of his god, and what is good and right, and he may even blatantly lie in the circumstance of protecting innocent lives.

Helpfulness: 8
In terms of action and deed alone, this would be a 10. But his verbal abuse reduces this score overall.

Loyalty: 10
Once you're in, you're in. To the end.
